Today’s morning lecture was from Cedric Tille and focused on global finance. He discussed the various measures of trade and financial globalization, and presented the patterns over the last twenty years. The implications of financial globalizations for international linkages were also illustrated through some examples.
He also considered the role of financial globalization in current policy issues, including the large external deficit of the United States and the ability of central banks to conduct an independent monetary policy.
The afternoon session was led by Phillipp Borel from the Ideas Centre. His workshop, titled “Negotiating Development into the DDA: the role of developing countries” had students discussing developing countries and the Doha Development Agenda (DDA).
Later in the afternoon, we had an optional tour of the World Heath Organization that some students attended. We took a brief tour of the organization, saw the terrace and views of Lake Geneva, and had an opportunity to ask a number of questions of our guide, who also happened to be the former director of WHO in Czechoslokavia and is now working to implement more healthcare worker education, training, and retention in Africa.
